Gary A. Gonya, M.D., is a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon at NY Orthopedics whose practice is devoted entirely to the diagnosis and surgical management of neck, back and nerve-related spinal conditions. With more than 25 years of experience in the field, he brings a depth of subspecialty expertise and a philosophy of care that puts education and advocacy at the center of every patient interaction.

Dr. Gonya earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Amherst College in 1994, going on to complete his Doctor of Medicine degree at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 1998. From there, he pursued his orthopedic surgery residency at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City, where he was selected as Chief Resident during the final year of his training in 2004. While completing his residency, he undertook subspecialty rotations that extended his clinical reach beyond the spine, including pediatric orthopedic surgery at DuPont Children’s Hospital and orthopedic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. 

Following residency, Dr. Gonya pursued advanced fellowship training in orthopedic spine surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. During his time at Hopkins, he trained in a multispecialty environment that placed him alongside recognized leaders in neurosurgery, as well as in pediatric and adult spinal deformity correction surgery. 

After completing his fellowship, Dr. Gonya built a distinguished academic career before joining NY Orthopedics. He served as Associate Professor and Director of the Division of Spine Surgery at The Ohio State University, where he also directed the Biodynamics Laboratory. He later held a faculty appointment as Associate Professor at Cooper University Hospital, further deepening his commitment to advancing orthopedic spine surgery through education and scientific inquiry. 

When surgery is indicated, Dr. Gonya is a leading practitioner of minimally invasive and muscle-sparing techniques, including endoscopic spine surgery using camera-guided technology and motion-preserving disc replacement. He performs procedures across the full length of the spine, from cervical conditions affecting the neck to complex lumbar pathology in the lower back, with the technical range to address both degenerative disease and structural deformity.

Dr.Gonya is the BEST, on 12/14/23 Dr.Gonya preformed the ultimate surgery on my back. He is very hands on and his bedside manners is the best. Even when I returned for my 6 week check he still had the same caring attitude as he had on the first day I met him. He takes times with his patients, gets to know you and listens to your concerns. I can not rave enough about Dr. Gonya! When no one else would touch my companions back….saying the original surgeon should redo it, no thank you! Dr. Gonya said this must be done now, he saw how loose the hardware was, his spine was just not stable at all. He was also very compassionate to my companions 24/7 suffering. The others said the same thing, but no one wants to fix another surgeons mess, but he took he case on! He takes his time to explain everything in terms a non medical person can understand. His compassion is something missing in most doctors these days. He is a godsend to anyone needing a doctor who not only cares about you but is a talented surgeon! In addition, his post op care is amazing! You will not be disappointed in this doctor!

Not just a doctor, a very caring person. Takes time to listen to you and does not brush you off. I would highly recomend this doctor to anyone with back problems. He will point out that with back problems there is no quick fix and that treatment will take time. I have seen him for 3 seperate injuries now, two of which ended up requiring surgery and should I have back problems again will only return to his office.

I see Dr. Gonya in his Massapequa practice and he’s a very nice, helpful and REASSURING doctor! He doesnt just see you for a minute and walks out, he takes his time and asks questions, and you do the same to him. A lot of docs I have been to seem very big headed, and he is very down to earth! Not that this matters, but he’s also extremely good looking! haha
